Dragon Medical:

Can Dragon Medical Work For Medical Transcription?

This is a subject that I hear about a lot. I hear lots of pros and cons, but for me this is the best thing that could have ever come out on the market for us transcriptionists.

Dragon Medical is speech and voice recognition software; it's a computer software which recognizes your voice and converts speech to text.

Dragon Medical is new to medical transcription, you might see it called “automated speech recognition (ASR) or “voice recognition” (VR) dictation. You will be using a headset that has a microphone attached to it. While you listen to the doctor dictate (using your foot pedal to stop/continue) you re-dictate what the doctors says clearly and the speech recognition software will write out what you are saying. It can be challenging at first but practice makes perfect! In my opinion, this can work for transcriptionists, rather than against. Also, the added step of needing to proofread your own work is not always too much of a burden. Dragon Medical has allowed me to type more reports per day, in turn making me more money. It has a built in medical vocabulary, which means I do not have to look up words as often as I would if I was typing.

Dragon Medical Tips - Here are some helpful tips on using Dragon Medical.

Dragon Medical -Let me share with you how I use Dragon Medical Naturally Speaking.

Headset with Microphone - This style of headset with microphone is needed to use Dragon Medical 10. You will be listening to the audio and repeating the dictation into the microphone, allowing the software to type what you are saying. Again, try and pick a headset that is comfortable, has good sound quality, light weight, and has noise canceling. (You can also purchase a package deal for a bit more with Dragon Medical 10 for a headset/mic). I use and like this style of headset (below) since the microphone is adjustable, it cups over my complete ear, and can be moved upwards, letting you use it as a regular headset also without the interference of the microphone.

I was amazed at first how easy the software is to use. It's pretty much hands-free. You speak into the microphone and tell it where to go and what to do. On the Dragon Bar, you find controls to turn on and off the microphone, change users, increase the software's accuracy, access the help functionality, and access the advanced options.

Since it is 95% accurate, make sure to speak at your normal pace and very clear. This will allow the system to clearly hear what you are saying. Make sure to always proofread your work as it can misspell words. This is a software and can't make logical conclusions.

Dragon Medical can be expensive ($1,549.00) but many users and I even can confirm that it will be worth everything penny spent. (Amazon has it for $1,549.00 - it can be listed above for more but when you click on the link they have it available for $1,549.00 or less).
